Troubleshooting

I can't delete a file or directory

Several reasons have to be taken into account, to find out, why files or directories cannot be deleted.

This example describes a very easy way using the wide spread TotalCommander as FTP-Browser

  1. You are not the owner of the files which means that the files are created under an other user acccount:
    • if you logged in with a user account other than “samba” e.g. using FTP files the file/directory owner maybe “admin” or any other user
    • if you at least have no idea which owner the files please:
      1. login with your favorite ftp browser e.g. as “admin”
      2. right click onto the directory [..], or file
      3. choose “Properties” to find out the real owner

A new window will be opened that shows you the file rights and the owner of the file as follows:

Note: the first entry “admin” shows the owner of the file, the second “admin” means the file belongs to the group “admin”
    • connect to your intradisk as the file owner (”admin” in this example) and delete the appropriate file or directory
  2. Incompatibile filenames starting with a blank " " are not properly managed when transferring the files using some ftp browsers.
    • Login via telnet as the owner of the file (see above)
      1. remove the files manually with the “rm” command.
      2. escape the leading and all other blanks using the escape character “\ "
      3. Tab Completion helps you to list allready escaped files (e.g.: cd /export dir, then press <tab> twice)
